Comment:
As a result of various factors including colonialization and world- wide trade, different varieties of English is spoken in many different parts of the world, including countries such as Jamaica, Hawai’i or Singapore. These varieties, which are the result of the language contact between English and one or more other languages are known as English- based pidgins and creoles.
After gaining an overview of existing English- based pidgins and creoles, we will discuss theories about the origin of such contact languages. Then, we will examine some of these varieties in greater detail by looking at their historical development as well as the linguistic features.
As this course is part of the module "Methodische Grundlagen", it will also contain certain general academic skills beyond the scope of this specific seminar, such as basic and advanced search for literature, the OED, time management, and form of citation.
