Comment:
This course aims at introducing students to the study of English and American literature on three interrelated levels:
1. Students get an overview of the periods of English and American literature and their cultural contexts.
2. Students will familiarise themselves with the most important techniques and terms of literary analysis. They will acquire the skills needed for the interpretation of literary texts from all genres (poetry, drama, and prose) and apply them in close-reading exercises to selected texts from various periods.
3. Students will be introduced to important "schools" of critical approaches to the study of literature as well as to the methods of scholarly research and writing.
Important notes:
Attendance in the first session is mandatory.
