Comment:
Pragmatics deals with speaker meaning rather than sentence meaning. Key to determining speaker meaning is the context, in its multiple manifestations, in which an utterance is being made. The aim of this seminar is to introduce students to key concepts pragmatic research has developed to describe how text and context interact to create meaning. Among these are pragmatic principles, conversational organization, speech acts, reference and deixis, and emotive communication. Also, the seminar will consider the contribution that corpus linguistic research has made to the study of pragmatic phenomena. Students will acquire basic skills in doing small-scale corpus-linguistic analyses using online corpora. Recommended reading. Yule, George. 1996. Pragmatics. Oxford: Oxford University Press.
