Comment:
This seminar will spend the semester analysing and interpreting John Milton’s pastoral elegy “Lycidas” from 1637. To get a detailed and nuanced understanding of the poem’s 193 lines we will approach it from various angles: we will look at Early Modern political, social and religious history. We will examine the formal aspects, their literary history and their meaning in the poem’s context. We will trace back the history of the literary genres and the religious tractates that influenced the “Lycidas”. Milton’s extended use of mythological, biblical and geographical symbolism will help in understanding the poem’s vast reach.
Ultimately, the seminar’s participants shall gain an understanding of the various textual, historical, theological, philosophical and psychological layers that are relevant in processes of creating meaning(s).
Requirements:
Attendance in the first session is mandatory as is a mandatory test on the poem’s vocabulary.
