Comment:
This seminar focuses on conversation, widely seen as the most
fundamental context type of language use. Among the questions we will
address are the following: What situation type does conversation occur in?
How does this situation constrain language production? What lexis is
typical of conversation? To what extent is the syntax of conversation
different than the syntax of writing? How can the differences be explained?
Does 'anything go' or is conversation structured? How do conversationalists
organize turntaking? What sub-genres does conversation play host to? To
widen the scope beyond conversation we will also consider
non-conversational speech genres such as political addresses as well as
conversation-like written genres such as chat and email.
