Contents:
The Bible is often said to be one of the most influential texts of all times. Its origins go back thousands of years. We can read it in many (historical) versions and translations in various languages. The Bible contains a wide variety of text types, e.g. fictional stories, legal texts and love poetry. In the first part of the course we will discuss the Bible as text(s) and the different perspectives we might take towards this text.
In the second part of this course you will develop a project about the language of the Bible and explore it within a linguistic framework.

At the end of the semester (Saturday, July 4th 2015), there will be a conference at which all participants must present the results of their own project. Participation on that day is obligatory, so save the date.

Disclaimer: This seminar does not aim at religious indoctrination of any kind. Instead we will discuss the Bible as a manifestation of the English language (and other languages?) in its multiple varieties. A basic familiarity with the bible as text and its content is of course required.

Literature:
A bibliography will be provided in the first session of the semester.

Comment:
How is Chaucer's language characterized? What phonological, semantic and syntactic key features separate his use of language from Modern English? In the first part of this course you will be introduced to a diachronic approach to analyze the differences between Middle English and Modern English. In the second part of this course you will develop a project on Chaucer's language use and explore it within a linguistic framework. At the end of the semester, there will be a conference at which all participants must present the results of their own project. Participation on that day is obligatory, so save the date.
