Literature:
A list with selected readings will be provided in the first session.

Comment:
This course gives an introduction into the Middle English period. We will discuss linguistic problems of Middle English both synchronically and diachronically (i.e. in contrast to present day English or even present day German). We will investigate into these problems by reading and translating Middle English texts – mainly Chaucer. There will also be more general aspects of the Middle English time involved such as literature, society or historical events.
