Comment:
We are going to look at surfing less as a sport but rather as a cultural phenomenon which has its roots in ritual. Following its introduction to American culture from Hawai'i to California in the late 19th century, surfing began to play a part in emerging West Coast subculture, before commercialisation and increasing media hype set in during the mid-1960s.
We are going read and discuss a wide range of fictional and expository texts from the 18th century to the immediate present, but we shall also focus on film and popular music.
