This seminar provides an introduction to Lexical-Functional Grammar (LFG) – a generative theory of grammar. LFG is a psychologically and typologically plausible theory of grammar which constitutes a nonderivational approach to syntax. It is characterised by its specific projection architecture, consisting of three parallel levels of linguistics representation, all of which are related to each other by means of functional constraints.
The main objective of the seminar is to provide an overview of the basic architecture of LFG. After discussing the idea underlying generative grammars – i.e. to represent underlying linguistic knowledge - we will explore the general design principles guiding LFG, the different levels of linguistic representation and the specific mechanisms postulated in the theory as well as the guiding the mapping processes between them. Students attending the course should have some basic knowledge of syntax.
