Requirements and recommendations:
The course is designed to be self-contained. Basics from Chemistry and Physics courses for freshman are helpful.

Aim of the event:
This course is intended to provide the foundation for understanding the principles used in design and use of materials for structural applications. To a smaller extend functional materials will be covered. Therefore, focus is on the relationship between (micro)structure and mechanial properties.

Target group:
Freshman in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering as well as students with a need to have substantial background in mechanical engineering.

Contents:
Introduction Types of Materials Structure - Property Correlation Materials Selection Basics Atomic Structure Atomic Bonding Crystalline Structure Type of Lattices Lattice Imperfections Amorphous Materials Phase Diagrams The Phase Rule Binary Alloys The Lever Rule Characteristic Phase Diagrams Ternary Phase Diagrams Recovery and Recrystallization Materials Testing Tensile Test Hardness Test Creep Test Charpy Test Fracture Mechanics Fatigue Ferrous Alloys The Phase Diagram for Fe-C Steelmaking TTT-diagrams Martensite and Bainite Heat Treatment Cast Iron Standards Non-Ferrous Alloys Light Metals Hight-temperature Alloys Polymers References
