Aim of the event:
Generally:
• Basic knowledge in important environmental aspects of regenerative energies.
• Basic understandig of physical interrelations of different energy forms and conversions
• Ability to estimate the efficiency of energy technologies and saving potentials
specially in WS 2011/12:
• Knowledge in thermical desalination in MSF and MED plants.
• Knowledge in evaporation and condensation of water and heat transfer in regenerative heat exchanger.
• Knowledge in different desalination methods, their advantages and disadvantages
Target group:
Students of mechanical engineering and WING
Contents:
In WS 2009/10 we build a desalination unit working as Multi-Effect-Distillation.
This plant is to be calculated and optimized.
The heat is delivered by hot water (95°C), which evaporates part of the first seawater.
The vapour condenses and part of the second layer of seawater evaporates. This is repeated twelve times. The last vapour condenses at a seawater cooled titanium plate.
To enhance the effect, the hot distillate and brine is cooled by seawater, which is heated to the evaporation temperature.
In this seminar we calculate the energy needed to produce one m^3 fresh water, the maximal amount of destillate and the exergy looses in all parts of the plant.
With this information we will construct a better model of the desalination plant.
We will compare this with commercially available plants.
Advantages and disadvantages of the prototyp will be discussed.

Energy efficient heat transfer methods
Rational use of energy
Comment:
Clear and fresh water and energy are basic conditions for all men.
With dwindling ressources on fossil and nuclear energy we can expect higher prices and political stress. To avoid this it is necessary to research and develop alternative energies and solar desalination.
The methods should be robust and easy to handle, so every man and woman can get enough water and energy.
The challenge is the construction of simple plants, which mimicry nature and can be maintained easily.
Important notes:
This project seminar is theoretical.
Whoever is not able to handle formulas, will certainly find an appropriate seminar.
