Basic courses in engineering mechanics and mathematics

Aim of the event:
For the development of technical products and engineering structures numerical methods of analysis are of increasing importance. In this course an introduction to the finite element method (FEM) is given through an engineering approach. The method will be developed by analysing plane truss and beam systems first and is then extended and applied to problems of structural and solid mechanics. This will be done by the aid of using a commercially well established finite element programme.

Target group:
Students of mechanical and industrial engineering, information science in engineering and techno mathematics

Contents:
1 FEM for elastic truss and beam systems

· Element and system stiffness relation

· Examples and applications of the FEM to problems of structural analysis


2 Supplements

· Nodal point coordinates, rigid body and kinematical degrees of freedom, distributed element loads


3 FEM for plane problems of elasticity

· Element stiffness matrices, element types, element properties

· FE-modelling, FE-discretisation, FE-mesh properties

· Application of the FEM to plane problems of stress and strain analysis
