Voraussetzungen und Empfehlungen: In order to attend this course you MUST have passed the Introduction to Linguistics.
Inhalt: Topics such as gender and sexuality and how to talk about them are debated heatedly in many English speaking countries. The agents in these discussions come from all ends of the political spectrum. While conservative politicians such as Florida Governor Ron de Santis sign off "don't say gay" bills (2022), queer activists such as drag queen Trixie Mattel respond to homophobic 'groomer' narratives saying "We don’t hope [your children]'re gay. We don’t hope they turn out trans.(...) What we hope is that, if they are trans or are gay, they find a community faster than many of us did." (2023) In our seminar, we will look at language use like this by taking on a (critical) discourse analysis perspective. We will work both qualitatively and quantitatively, i.e. with corpus tools.
Literatur: A list with selected readings will be provided in the first session.
Wichtige Hinweise: Please note that physical attendance is necessary in the first session so that we can determine the demand. Any spots on the course that are not taken will be given to other students.
