Inhalt: This course will introduce students to the systematic study and analysis of literary texts. While offering an overview of literary history, periodisation and the different genres, the course will also outline the wider aspects of literary theory. In its approach, the course relies on the close study of select examples of literary texts from poetry, narrative and drama. The samples provide the opportunity to explore and apply the techniques and terminology of literary analysis and interpretation. Through the study of primary and secondary texts, students will acquire knowledge of the essential tools and resources for academic research and writing.
Literatur: We will read a wide range of primary and secondary literature pertaining to the study of British, American and Anglophone Literatures. All students must acquire: Ansgar and Vera Nünning, An Introduction to the Study of English and American Literature (any of the multiple editions will do). William Shakespeare: Richard III (Arden Edition). Additional reading material will be made available on PANDA.
