Contrastive Linguistics English and German
Contrastive Linguistics (CL) traditionally refers to the systematic comparison of two languages with the aim of describing their similarities and differences.
Given that English and German are historically closely related, they are surprisingly different. This course takes a close look at the major contrasts between English and German. Topics discussed in class include, among others, contrastive phonology, morphology, tense and aspect, word order as well as contrasts in the lexicon.

As this course is part of the module "Methodische Grundlagen", it will also contain certain general academic skills beyond the scope of this specific seminar, including basic and advanced search for literature, the OED, corpora, time management, and form of citation.

Morphology and Word Formation
In our daily life we encounter words with new meanings, words in different forms, words that were formed in other languages or even form new words ourselves - all of these aspects will be dealt with in this class. We will explore different types of word formation and discuss how to classify and analyse words and their building blocks in general. The focus of this class will not only lie on established texts and theories in the area of morphology and word formation but we will also apply theoretical aspects to data and critically examine existing theories.

As this course is part of the module "Methodische Grundlagen", it will also contain certain general academic skills beyond the scope of this specific seminar, including basic and advanced search for literature, the OED, time management, and form of citation.

What English teachers need to know about English
This course is designed in particular for BEd. students who plan to teach English as a Foreign language in the future. We will take a look at phonetics/phonology, morphology and syntax in order to investigate, how knowledge of these descriptive levels of English can be translated into teaching English to different learner groups. We will look at some of the text books and consider from a linguistic point of view, how and which language components are taught explicitly and implicitly. In this context, we will also discuss the use of language corpora and AI in order to support language teaching and learning.

Multilingualism
Many people grow up with not just one but two or more languages. Some languages are learned from birth, some are acquired during early childhood and some are learned later in life and in various contexts, i.e. school, work, social media, etc. In this seminar, we will focus on the multilingual language acquisition as well as on multilingual language use. More specifically, we will elaborate on the connection between e.g. identity & multilingualism, emotions & multilingualism, etc. as well as consider important topics like code-switching and multilingualism in cyberspace. Finally, we will discuss some research methods for investigating multilingualism in more detail.
Attendance at the first session is mandatory.

Sociolinguistics (A)
The seminar provides an introduction to the linguistic field of sociolinguistics, which focuses on the relationship between language and society. We will explore language use in different social and cultural contexts and investigate the potential impact of social variables such as gender, age, social class, ethnicity or occupation on variation in language use. The seminar engages with issues such as how people speak in different contexts and with different interlocutors, different forms of politeness, code-switching in bilingual contexts, and differences in the ways women and men use language.
