English in New Zealand
Kia Ora! Welcome to Aotearoa!
In this research based seminar, we will explore the varieties of English spoken in New Zealand from different linguistic perspectives: Which phonological features set New Zealand English apart from other varieties of English? Which lexical inventions are unique to English in New Zealand? How can we look at English in New Zealand from a pragmatic perspective? Moreover, this class will introduce you to various research methods to help you come up with and conduct your own linguistic research project.

After the first five sessions, the students will develop and conduct their own small research project based on the first half of the seminar. At the end of the semester (Saturday,20th January 2024) there will be a conference at which all participants must present the results of their own project.

That’s my spot!” Language in TV comedy series
Enjoy binge-watching? Have a Netflix and/ or Amazon Prime subscription? Then this course is for you, because it will be your perfect excuse to watch all the seasons of your all-time favourite series again and call it studying.
In this course, we will approach language in TV comedy series by analysing the discourse and examining the way language is used to shape the individual characters and – ultimately - better understand why these series keep us hooked in front of the screen.
After the first sessions, which serve as input sessions, all students will develop and conduct their own small research project related to the language in comedy series and present this project at the end of the course.

The course will finish with a student conference (Saturday,20th January 2024) at which students will present their own research project. Participation on that day is mandatory. Any spots on the course that are not taken will be given to other students in the first session.

Computer-Medicated Communication

Computer-Mediated Communication, or short CMC, is a discipline in Linguistics that deals with all kinds of linguistic aspects in areas such as computers, internet and social media. In this class we will explore how language is used on different internet platforms, which approaches we can take to analyse CMC, and how different media and contexts influence our language. After five input sessions in which we will focus on content as well as research methods you will get the chance to conduct your own linguistic research project in the field of CMC.

After the first five sessions, the students will develop and conduct their own small research project based on the first half of the seminar. At the end of the semester (Saturday,20th January 2024) there will be a conference at which all participants must present the results of their own project.

Accents of English

In this seminar, we will explore different native and non-native accents of English. We will look at ways of talking about and analysing accents and discuss the accents from a phonological as well as sociolinguistic point of view.

After the first five sessions, the students will develop and conduct their own small research project based on the first half of the seminar. At the end of the semester (Saturday,20th January 2024) there will be a conference at which all participants must present the results of their own project.

Wichtige Hinweise:
Please note that physical attendance is necessary in the first session so that we can determine the demand. Any spots on the course that are not taken will be given to other students.
