Voraussetzungen und Empfehlungen: In order to attend this course, you MUST have passed the Introduction to Linguistics.
Inhalt: In contrast to earlier stages of English, most users of English can read and understand Early Modern English texts with relative ease. Many texts from this period (e.g. Shakespeare, The King James Bible) are still widely "read" today. This class aims at challenging this overt familiarity and addresses areas in which drastic changes occured over the course of roughly two centuries: Spelling become standardized (how?), pronunciation shifted (why?), the vocabulary was expanded (consequences?) and the use of the English language became acceptable for all purposes. We will use both secondary and primary sources (i.e. Early Modern English accounts about the language) as basis for our discussions.
Literatur: A list with selected readings will be provided in the first session.
Wichtige Hinweise: Please note that physical attendance is necessary in the first session so that we can determine the demand. Any spots on the course that are not taken will be given to other students. Hinweis für Studierende, die in der ersten Anmeldephase keinen Seminarplatz in der englischen Sprachwissenschaft bekommen haben: Bitte nutzen Sie wie gewohnt die Revisionsphase. Falls Sie dann immer noch keinen Platz bekommen, wenden Sie sich bitte an Dr. Markus Freudinger. Bitte benutzen Sie den Betreff: „HuDi-Sprechstunde“.
