Zielgruppe:
This course is primarily aimed at students of English linguistics in their first semester. In contrast to other classes, you do NOT need the Introduction to Linguistics as a prerequisite. This is not a course for B.Ed. students.

Inhalt:
The class Linguistic Methods consists of two parts: a lecture and an exercise session (of which there are 4 parallal groups at different times). Both the lecture and the exercise session last 45 minutes each. While the lecture will give you a background on the topics under discussion, the exercise sessions will give you the opportunity to practice your academic skills with hands-on activities.
Topics include:
- how to find a research question
- how to find and work with literature
- qualitative vs. quantitative research methods in linguistics
- data collection and analysis
- presenting your results
- referencing sources

Time and place of lecture:
Thursday, 1pm-2pm in lecture theatre (tba).

Time and place of exercise sessions:
Group A: Thursday, 9am-10am in W1.101
Group B: Thursday, 10am-11am in W1.101
Group C: Thursday, 2pm-3pm in W1.101
Group D: Thursday, 3pm-4pm in W1.101

A list with selected readings will be provided in the first session.

Please note that physical attendance is necessary in the first session, so we can determine the demand. Any spots on the course that are not taken will be given to other students.
