B.Ed. students who enrolled prior to the Winter Term 2022/2023 (PO 2016/2017): It is highly recommended that you have successfully completed the Introduction to Literary Studies before taking this class.

Inhalt:
With the rise of digital and social media, the popularity of personal narratives has increased dramatically during the twenty-first century. Never before in literary history have memoirs, autobiographies, diaries, and other forms of self-life-writing been published as numerously as right now, never before have people read and discussed life narratives more widely than today, and never before have personal narratives had more traction in the cultural and socio-political spheres.

While literary critics have long treated the memoir as merely a minor relative of its more canonized sibling, the autobiography, and while its supposed non-fictionality has left many under the impression that it does not require further explanation, in this class, we are going to explore memoir as a literary genre.

As this class is part of the "Methodische Grundlagen" module, we will combine our discussions on the literariness and genericity of memoirs with an introduction to academic writing. Exploring the basic format, structure, and content of an academic paper, this class will require you to read one full-text memoir of your choice and regularly produce texts yourself (at home and in class).

Thus, this class will require your continuous participation and regular attendance.

Literatur:
You will be required to purchase one contemporary memoir of your choice within the first weeks of this class.
All other reading material will be provided on PANDA.
