Morphology and Word Formation (A)
Morphology is about the basic building blocks that words are composed of. Words can come in different inflectional forms (e.g. talk - talks - talking - talked) and be combined to new complex words (e.g. walkie-talkie, talkshow). This class introduces you to the linguistic terminology that is necessary to identify and analyse the internal structure of words. We will take a closer look at various types of word formation (e.g. compounding, suffixations) and inflectional morphology both from a synchronic and a diachronic perspective.

As this course is part of the module "Methodische Grundlagen", it will also contain certain general academic skills beyond the scope of this specific seminar, including basic and advanced search for literature, the OED, corpora, time management, and form of citation.

Morphology and Word Formation (B)

Semantics
Do we all mean the same when we talk about trees, cars, the colour blue or about love? The topic of this course will be to consider how linguistics provides answers to this question. We will look into concepts such as reference and componential analysis, cover the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, consider basic colour terms and metaphors.

As this course is part of the module "Methodische Grundlagen", it will also contain certain general academic skills beyond the scope of this specific seminar, including basic and advanced search for literature, the OED, corpora, time management, and form of citation.

Second Language Acquisition Theories
In this course we will take a look at different attempts to explain how a second language is acquired. Additionally, we will review evidence for and/or against these theories. Although the focus of this course will be on second language acquisition, we will also need to consider how the acquisition of a first language could be explained and whether there are differences between the acquisition of a first and a second language.

As this course is part of the module "Methodische Grundlagen", it will also contain certain general academic skills beyond the scope of this specific seminar, including basic and advanced search for literature, the OED, corpora, time management, and form of citation.

English Linguistics for Early Learners
Teaching English to beginning learners is most successful when the teacher has a sound background knowledge of English linguistics. This course aims to further your knowledge of various aspects discussed in the Introduction to Linguistics, focussing on those branches of linguistics that are particularly important for pupils in their first years of learning English.
This course is recommended for students who are studying G or HRSGe (G/SP - Modul Fachwissenschaften / HRSGe – Methodische Grundlagen: Linguistics)

As this course is part of the module "Methodische Grundlagen", it will also contain certain general academic skills beyond the scope of this specific seminar, including basic and advanced search for literature, the OED, time management, and form of citation.

Contrastive Linguistics English and German
Contrastive Linguistics (CL) traditionally refers to the systematic comparison of two languages with the aim of describing their similarities and differences.
Given that English and German are historically closely related, they are surprisingly different. This course takes a close look at the major contrasts between English and German. Topics discussed in class include, among others, contrastive phonology, morphology, tense and aspect, word order as well as contrasts in the lexicon.

As this course is part of the module "Methodische Grundlagen", it will also contain certain general academic skills beyond the scope of this specific seminar, including basic and advanced search for literature, the OED, corpora, time management, and form of citation.

Syntax
This seminar takes a closer look at syntax and syntactic structures as introduced in the introductory course. Adding to that, we will consider different theoretical approaches to syntax and explore more complex syntactic structures (subordinate clauses) as well as some of the most frequent syntactic strategies (e.g. clefting or extraposition).

As this course is part of the module "Methodische Grundlagen", it will also contain general academic skills beyond the scope of this specific seminar, including basic and advanced searches for literature, the OED, corpora, time management, and forms of citation.

Sociolinguistics
Does social class determine the way that we speak? How does language change and vary? Are different accents and dialects perceived differently? What even is the difference between a dialect and an accent? All these questions, among many others, will be dealt with in this seminar. We will be looking at how social variables, such as age, gender or class, influence our language use and how language use in turn influences society and perception of speakers. In order to do this, we will focus on previous research in the area of sociolinguistics and we will also apply theories to data and analyse language differences and their interaction with society ourselves.

As this course is part of the module "Methodische Grundlagen"/”Beschreibungsebenen”, it will also contain certain general academic skills beyond the scope of this specific seminar, including basic and advanced search for literature, the OED, time management, and form of citatio

Wichtige Hinweise:
Please note that physical attendance is necessary in the first session, so we can determine the demand. Any spots on the course that are not taken will be given to other students.
