Inhalt: While gender studies historically focussed strongly on differences and power dynamics between women and men (both presumably cis & straight), queer linguistics challenges this heteronormative view. We will look at the language of people whose sexual orientation or gender identity is somewhat 'deviant from the norm' or queer. How do people who identify as LGBTQIA+ use language? Do they have a particular vocabulary (i.e. slang) or discourse practices? And how are they being talked about? What are the discourses around queer people? The question in the title of the course obviously refers to the issue of personal pronouns when we recognize that binary options (she & he) are not enough - which in turn provokes criticism, expressed e.g. in the narrative of language decline.
Literatur: A list with selected readings will be provided in the first session.
