Zielgruppe: This course is exclusively aimed at students of English linguistics in their first semester. In contrast to other classes, you do NOT need the Introduction to Linguistics as a prerequisite.
Inhalt: The title of this course takes up the title of a book by John Langshaw Austin (1962) which is sometimes considered the starting point of the linguistic field of Pragmatics. In this class, we take a closer look at the intentions of speakers in order to find out how they "do things with words". The focus of our attention will be on functions of language (according to Bühler and Jakobson), speech act theory (according to Austin and Searle), aspects of (im-)politeness and on the general structure of conversations.
Literatur: A list with selected readings will be provided in the first session.
