Kommentar: The working language of this seminar is English. Your English does not need to be flawless, though. Eagerness to take active part in the discussion is valued more than language proficiency. Arising from Carol Gilligan‘s seminal book “In a Different Voice,” ethics of care offers an alternative both to consequential and deontological ethical theories. Influenced by feminist thinking of the second half of the 20th century and recurring to the Greek tradition of virtue ethics, it assumes that human relationality requires a normative response with consideration to its plurality. Hence, ethics of care does not presuppose a universal subject but acknowledges different modes of reciprocal relations between people in their diversity: their strengths, needs, and societal networks they are part of. In this seminar, we will read and discuss classical positions of care ethics, and critical responses to these. We will also engage with possibilities of practical implementation of care ethics and their political implications.
