Morphology and Word Formation
In this seminar, which is located in the B.A. programme, we will take a closer look at English morphology and word formation, i.e. the internal structure of words, their different inflectional forms (e.g. cook – cooks – cooking – cooked), as well as the creation of new words built on the basis of other words (e.g. compounding or suffixation). The aim of the course is to enable students to analyse complex words.

As this course is part of the module “Methodische Grundlagen”, it will also contain certain general academic skills beyond the scope of this specific seminar, including basic and advanced search for literature, the OED, corpora, time management, and form of citation.

Attendance at the first session is mandatory.

Introduction to Syntax
This class takes a closer look at concepts from syntax that students should already be familiar with from the introductory course such as word class, phrases, clause elements. From there, we will dive into more complex structures such as subordinate clauses in their different forms (finite, non-finite, verbless) and functions (nominal, adverbial, relative). Syntactical strategies such as clefting (It's dark green that we've painted the kitchen.) or extraposition (It is a pleasure to teach Elizabeth.) will also be taken into account as a syntactical form of information processing.

As this course is part of the module "Methodische Grundlagen", it will also contain certain general academic skills beyond the scope of this specific seminar, including basic and advanced searches for literature, the OED, corpora, time management, and forms of citation.

English Accents and Dialects
Not all speakers of English speak the same way. The English language has spread around the globe and distinct varieties of English have emerged in different regions of the world.
In this seminar, we are going to have a look at a few select varieties of English with a particular focus on how they can be described phonologically and how they differ from “standard” varieties of English in other ways, for example in terms of grammar and vocabulary.

As this course is part of the module “Methodische Grundlagen”, it will also contain certain general academic skills beyond the scope of this specific seminar, including basic and advanced search for literature, the OED, corpora, time management, and form of citation.

Semantics
When someone says, “this is not my cup of tea,” does the person refer to an actual cup of tea or rather something that they do not enjoy? How do we interpret utterances, words and their meanings and how does meaning change? All these questions are part of the study of semantics or, as it is often referred to, the study of meaning. Meaning is complex – from the meanings of sounds to words, metaphors, idioms, and even whole sentences and beyond, meaning is dependent on many factors such as historical context and development, culture, situation or simply the sentence or utterance that a linguistic unit occurs in. In this seminar we will be dealing with many different aspects of meaning such as metaphors, literal and non-literal meaning as well as ways to look up and research the meaning of words and other linguistic units.

As this course is part of the module "Methodische Grundlagen", it will also contain certain general academic skills beyond the scope of this specific seminar, including basic and advanced search for literature, the OED, time management, and form of citation.

Sociolinguistics
Sociolinguistics, as the name suggests, deals with the interplay between language and society. Language can be used differently by different people in different contexts. In this course, we will look at language variation by focussing both on language users (e.g. gender, age, regional and social dialects) and language uses (e.g. style, register, politeness).

As this course is part of the module "Methodische Grundlagen", it will also contain certain general academic skills beyond the scope of this specific seminar, including basic and advanced search for literature, the OED, time management, and form of citation.

English Linguistics for Early Learners
Teaching English to beginning learners is most successful when the teacher has a sound background knowledge of English linguistics. This course aims to further your knowledge of various aspects discussed in the Introduction to Linguistics, focussing on those branches of linguistics that are particularly important for pupils in their first years of learning English.
This course is recommended for students who are studying G or HRSGe (G/SP - Modul Fachwissenschaften / HRSGe – Methodische Grundlagen: Linguistics)

As this course is part of the module "Methodische Grundlagen", it will also contain certain general academic skills beyond the scope of this specific seminar, including basic and advanced search for literature, the OED, time management, and form of citation.

Contrastive Linguistics for English Teachers
This course will cover the most important aspects of English-German contrastive linguistics and discuss their relevance in the EFL classroom, taking textbooks and curricula from Primarstufe and Sek I into account.
This course is recommended for students who are studying G or HRSGe and want to further their knowledge of English linguistics (G – Vertiefungsmodul / HRSGe – Methodische Grundlagen: Linguistics).

As this course is part of the module "Methodische Grundlagen", it will also contain certain general academic skills beyond the scope of this specific seminar, including basic and advanced search for literature, the OED, time management, and form of citation.
