Kommentar:
In the contemporary humanities we observe an ever-growing interest in the material aspects of culture. Scholars discuss the "agency" of things, writers zoom in on the histories and meanings of everyday objects. At the same time, the Digital Age seems to lead us away from the world of actual objects. Reflecting on these contradictory processes, our course will investigate the "object histories" of American things, including the remote control, guns, chairs, headphones, and others. Participants should note that we will also visit Museum Ludwig, Cologne, where we will explore an exhibition showcasing the work of American artist and designer Isamu Noguchi.
