This class will introduce you to both dominant and subversive spirits, ideologies, and (cultural) politics in the United States during the Progressive Era. At the turn of the century, the US was not only becoming a modern nation but also saw unprecedented levels of social inequality. Making sense of the Progressive Era and its culture means tracing many contradictory idea(l)s promoted to address the problems and possibilities of the time. We will organize our discussions around questions of race, gender, and labor but also touch upon related fields in our study of Progressive Era culture. Contemporary novels, early film, muckraking journalism, and photography are among the aesthetic productions that will allow us insights into the era’s public feelings, cultural trends, and political visions. We will end by taking a closer look at progressivism in contemporary America, embodied by Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for example.



Weekly sessions will take place as Zoom meetings which are organized around your active participation.
