Phonemes and Graphemes
Why is <b> in "thumb" present in the spelling but not in its pronunciation? This seeming irregularity is one of the topics that will be addressed in this course, which will focus on the relation between phonemes and graphemes in the English language from a synchronic as well as from a diachronic point of view.

As this course is part of the module “Methodische Grundlagen”, it will also contain certain general academic skills beyond the scope of this specific seminar, including basic and advanced search for literature, the OED, corpora, time management, and form of citation.

Attendance at the first session is mandatory.

Please note that this course will very likely take place online and remote-only.
The weekly sessions are interactive in real time (“synchrone Lehre = die Lehrveranstaltung findet am Tag und der Uhrzeit statt, die in PAUL ausgewiesen ist”).

Morphology and Word-Formation
This course will introduce the participants to the study of morphology and word-formation in contemporary English. In other words, this course investigates the internal structure of words, their different inflectional forms (e.g. walk – walks – walking – walked), as well as methods of forming new words (e.g. compounding, suffixation).

The weekly sessions are designed as a mix of interactive real-time sessions (the sessions take place at the time and day indicated in PAUL) and asynchronous sessions (you can study at your own pace).

Contrastive Linguistics: English and German (A)
Have you ever wondered why some German speakers of English sound the way they do or why certain aspects of the English language feel so familiar to us as German Learners of English?
Contrastive Linguistics (CL) holds the answers! In this course, we will look at differences between English and German and try to understand what it is exactly that differentiates these two historically linked languages.

As this course is part of the module "Methodische Grundlagen", it will also introduce general academic skills such as basic and advanced search for literature, the OED, corpora, time management, and form of citation.

English Syntactic Structures (A)
This class takes a closer look at concepts from syntax that students should already be familiar with from the introductory course such as word class, phrases, clause elements. From there, we will dive into more complex structures such as subordinate clauses in their different forms (finite, non-finite, verbless) and functions (nominal, adverbial, relative). Syntactical strategies such as clefting (It's dark green that we've painted the kitchen.) or extraposition (It is a pleasure to teach Elizabeth.) will also be taken into account as a syntactical form of information processing.

As this course is part of the module “Methodische Grundlagen”, it will also contain certain general academic skills beyond the scope of this specific seminar, including basic and advanced search for literature, the OED, corpora, time management, and form of citation.

Introduction English Grammar
In this class we explore the world of English grammar. We will investigate the structures of sentences and also the functions of the different parts of a sentence. We will study the different occurrences of noun and verb phrases, different sentence types and move beyond the sentence level to include discourse strategies.

We will use the following textbook: Börjars, Kersti and Kate Burridge. 2019. Introducing English Grammar. Third edition. Routledge. https://www.routledge.com/Introducing-English-Grammar/Borjars-Burridge/p/book/9781138635319 The text will be available as digital library copy.
