Main Theories in Sociology of Education
Flourishing after the Second World War, the field of sociology of education applies sociological perspectives and social factors to analyze educational settings. The sociology of education contributes to our understanding of education by providing a unique angle to relate individual’s situations to broader social groups, social contexts, and social structure.
In this seminar, we will study the main theoretical paradigms in the sociology of education, which cover structural functionalism, conflict theory, symbolic interactionism, and critical pedagogy. Each paradigm has a different perspective on the mechanism that keeps society working. Education, as a social institution, accordingly plays heterogeneous roles to maintain or challenge the social order of society in different paradigms, whether through consensus, reproduction, construction or emancipation.
Throughout this course, we will first explore the main theories and their core concepts in the sociology of education; second, we will utilize different theoretical perspectives to analyze the important topics in this field, including gender, class, ethnicity, youth culture, curriculum, higher education, globalization, and so on. This seminar will be a mixture of presentation, visual media, discussion, and individual/group exercises of key concepts and the application of daily experiences to sociological ideas.
We will focus on the social influences on education, how education reflects and produces social inequality, and consequently the effects of education on individuals’ experiences and identities of their life trajectory. From the sociological perspectives of micro, meso, and macro level, we will engage in critical analysis of education and develop sociological literacy towards everyday educational settings.
