Kommentar:
The question whether Islam is compatible with modernity – and its post-Enlightenment value system, world view, science etc. – is still a pressing and relevant question. This course provides an introduction to a contemporary Muslim thinker’s ideas, who – being inspired by the post-Enlightenment thinkers, including German Idealists – like Kant, Hegel, Fichte etc. – and Romantics – like Goethe, Hölderlin, Schlegel etc. – tries to reconstruct his religious tradition, by providing a new reading of Islam that would best match with the scientific discoveries of his time and go along the lines of rationality, while using the methods and terminology of the philosophical traditions of his time. It was his firm conviction that Islam in its very nature is compatible with reason, science, human freedom and dignity, and is this-worldly, pragmatic and practical. What turned the Muslim thinkers’ gaze from the concrete, practical and this-worldly questions to the abstract and other-worldly issues was the Greek thought and the Hellenistic spell. Iqbal, therefore, sets himself the task of giving a more existential, pragmatic and human-centered reading of Islam, while cleansing it of the Hellenistic element.
By the end of this semester, students would be familiar with the major outlines of Muhammad Iqbal’s metaphysics, as one of the major and strongly influential contemporary Muslim reform thinkers, whose ideas can help them see the Islamic tradition from a novel and unprecedented perspective.
