The working language of this seminar is English. Your English does not need to be flawless, though. Eagerness to take active part in the discussion is valued more than language proficiency.
In her writings, Hannah Arendt strongly affirms the plurality of the world. From the very first moment, when she introduces the notion in The Human Condition, it becomes clear, that plurality is the cornerstone of condition humaine. For Arendt, plurality means that “men, not Man, live on the earth and inhabit the world”. This seemingly banal assumption affects her whole political theory considerably. This seminar aims at exploring challenges posed by plurality, but also opportunities it offers.
The seminar accompanies the international conference “Hannah Arendt: Challenges of Plurality” (13th – 15th December 2018, upb.de/hannaharendt2018), hosted at the Paderborn University. As an interdisciplinary endeavor, it opens up for different approaches to Arendt, involving top Arendt-scholars from fields such as philosophy, politics, theology, media studies, sociology, gender studies, history, and others. It tackles currently relevant problems, such as populism, the crisis of political participation, migration politics and human rights, but also raises ever-present issues, such as the philosophical potential of the concept of plurality, possible foundations of normativity in our contingent world, or stimuli of political action.
Apart from getting acquainted with the foundations of Arendt’s political philosophy, seminar participants will have an opportunity to contribute to the conference through small projects. Additionally, seminar participants are expected to attend one day of the conference.
Prior knowledge of Arendt’s writings is welcome, but not necessary.
Please note the particular seminar schedule.
