The Master Class explores Diotima’s methodology – her way of doing philosophy – and what this tells us about what philosophy is, or can be. We’ll look briefly at Diotima’s relation to Socrates in terms of the setting of Plato’s Symposium, asking questions about the role of women in this dialogue. We’ll explore the categories of love and laughter as keys to understanding Diotima’s contribution to the history of Western philosophy. We’ll ask whether Diotima has something to teach us about doing philosophy today.
