Kommentar:
In Germany, women and men possess equal rights in the labour market and in organizations. German equality legislation guarantees a formal equality of employees regardless of their gender, race (or ethnicity), religion, disability, age or sexual identity. A multitude of equality policies and measures both in politics and in organizations work to ensure equal opportunities and prevent discrimination. However, a lot of inequalities can be found in organizations. Many of them concern the dimension of gender. They tend to work in an intersectional way, often linking gender and care (obligations).
In fact, women are not only underrepresented in high hierarchical levels, high-status positions and high-income occupations, and the gender pay gap in Germany oscillates around 22 per cent. They are also overrepresented in low-income jobs and low career levels and suffer more often than men from precarious financial situations in retirement. Statistically, women do a much larger amount of the unpaid work in households, family and (elder) care obligations, and still society attributes family responsibility to them, with negative consequences for career and income prospects. However, this applies not only to women but also to men who show their care obligations openly. Thus, a lot of inequalities in the labour market and in organizations are linked to gender and care.
In the course, we will discuss gender inequalities in theory and empirical research in organizations from an intersectional perspective. Central topics will be gendered organizations, motherhood and fatherhood penalties, work-life balance, gender inequalites in international organizations, equality policies and diversity management. In the final part of the seminar, we will learn how to study gender relationships in organizations in an empirical way. Thus, the course can inspire students to do their own research on gender and organizations e.g. for their MA thesis.
