The global 2008 financial and economic crisis had considerable impact on Europe`s economy, markedly affecting the employment and social situation. The intense job destruction in the aftermath of the crisis left millions of European citizen unemployed and made it even harder for youngsters to enter the European job market.  The European Union`s youth unemployment rate reached it`s peak in 2013  since the slow recovery from the crisis. But some countries were particularly hard hit by the economic slump - and some less. Whereas coutries such as Greece, Spain, Italy and Cyprus for example are currently and still having massive problems with youth unemployment, countries like Germany, Austria and the Netherlands seem to have weathered the crisis quite well. This leads on to following questions: Why are between European countries these considerable differences? Do countries with low levels of youth unemployment have crucial success factors? Are they maybe related to the education system? How are countries managing to improve their labour market situation and which strategies do they use to encounter the unemployment problem? What are the effects of youth unemployment on individuals and the society?
The aim of this seminar will be to target these raised quesitons systematically when analyzing the  causes and consequences of youth unemployment in different European countries.
