Voraussetzungen und Empfehlungen: Samuel Johnson, the author of the first English dictionary, once said about London: “A Man tired of London is tired of life”. There is clearly no other place like the buzzing metropolis on the River Thames. The British capital is the political and commercial powerhouse of the British Isles. For students of English it represents one of the most intriguing cultural and literary phenomena worth exploring. This seminar will take a closer look at the evolution of London from 1600 to 1900. Beginning with the final years of the reign of Queen Elizabeth I we will follow the city’s story through three centuries to the end of the reign of Queen Victoria. We shall engage with the upheavals of the Stuart period and the English Revolution, discuss the Great Fire and the rebuilding of the City, look at the rise of the imperial and commercial city in the eighteenth century, and explore the dark corners of Victorian London alongside Oliver Twist and Sherlock Holmes. Students who register for this course may be interested in joining the London excursion in May.
Literatur: Reading material will be made available in an eSeminarapparat.
