Kommentar: The working language of this seminar is English. Your English doesn’t need to be flawless, though. Eagerness to take active part in the discussion is valued more than language proficiency. In the globalization era the status of states as sovereign entities is being challenged. As the geographical distance between even most remote places on Earth seems to be shrinking, the ties between lives of people inhabiting different countries and continents become more and more apparent. Borders as we know them become a mere formality for some, but they remain an insurmountable barrier to others. Today more people are on the move than at any point in history so far. Under these circumstances, rethinking justice in global context becomes urgent necessity. Focusing on the question of migration – not only in the light of the current refugee situation, but also engaging in general reflection on the existential position of a migrant as a stranger to the world she lives in – this seminar offers some insights into the present state of the debate, making recourse to theorists as diverse as Hannah Arendt, John Rawls or Seyla Benhabib. Please note: The section of the seminar concerning Hannah Arendt will be co-taught by Dr. Marieke Borren (University of Pretoria/Utrecht University), whose expertise includes a project on Arendt and migration. For this reason, one of the seminar sessions will be prolonged (9 a.m. to 1 p.m.). The specific date will be announced at the first meeting on 21st April 2017.
