Kommentar: The question of cultural identity lies at the heart of many current debates in cultural studies and social theory. But how do we express our cultural identity? One important way is music. In this seminar we therefore analyze what difference music made and makes in the cultural construction of different places and the people living there (from the frontier song in the American West, the black spiritual in the South, to the rap song in the big cities). We will investigate the influence of politics, social structure, and religion as well as of race, ethnicity, class, gender and sexual orientation. In order to understand the different aspects of the intersections of music and cultural identity we will include texts from cultural studies, musicology and ethnomusicology.
