This course seeks to provide a Darstellung and Auslegung of the thought of Martin
Heidegger through the lens of what has become known as Heidegger’s Kehre. To this end, in the
first part of the course we will begin by a brief, systematic, and critical overview of Sein und Zeit
focusing on: a) situating the project of Heidegger in the context of the crisis in ontology that
unfolds at the beginning of the twentieth century; b) Heidegger’s existential analysis of the being
of Dasein in SZ; c) the nature of “primordial temporality” in terms of the being of Dasein and the
being of history. In the second part of the course, I will offer a a reading of a few of Heidegger’s
later works focusing on: a) the nature of the Kehre as a move from the meaning of being to the
question of the truth of being as a fundamental Auseinandersetzung with das Nichts as a thinking
of the oblivion of being; b) the relationship between the thinking of concealment as the essence of
unconcealment, of the thinking of the Abgrund or Ungrund that is the Urgrund of a world and a
historical people as belonging together with the event of being itself; finally, I put forward the
claim that c) the turn as a move from fundamental ontology to an ontology of what I will call the
cultural event.
To that end, we will study key chapter in Sein und Zeit, Heidegger’s seminal works, “Der Ursprung
des Kunstwerkes,” sections from “Identität und Differenz.”
