Voraussetzungen und Empfehlungen: Introduction to Literary Studies
Kommentar: W.E.B. Du Bois’ call in The Crisis in 1920 for “a renaissance of American Negro literature” was echoed by the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s and 30s - one of the landmarks of African American literary, artistic, and intellectual history. This course introduces students to some of the great writers of the Harlem Renaissance, among them W.E.B. Du Bois and Alain Locke as intellectual writers, Langston Hughes and Claude McKay as poets, and Nella Larsen as an example of women writers of the time. All of these writers sought to give expression to the African American experience in all its ambiguous and complex range. As the Harlem Renaissance is not only an era of great literary but artistic production as well, we will also dive into the music of the time.
