In the contemporary philosophical discourse the body is no longer reduced to its biological function; it has lost its connotation as ‘the prison of the soul’ and became an autonomous subject of philosophical reflection. The status of the human body as a gendered body has ceased to be perceived as a simple fact of life: it is political, normative, challenging. Proceeding from questions like: What does it mean to live in a female body? What is the normative potential of the male body imagery? What impact does the prevailing ideal body image have on women – and men?, this seminar will focus on philosophical aspects of the categories of body and embodiment in contemporary theories and will put the modes of bodily experience these theories propose up for discussion.
