Kommentar: This seminar will examine selected aspects of the life and culture of the Scottish highlands and islands from earliest times to the present day. The spotlight will fall initially on the different peoples who have settled in the area – Picts, Gaels and Norsemen – and by focussing on such topics as archaeology, art, language, literature and religion will explore their contribution to the developing nation of Scotland as well as their interaction with the other peoples of Scotland, with the southern parts of Britain and with continental Europe. This historical perspective will lead into a consideration of the place of the highlands and islands in today’s Scotland, and of how social, political and economic aspects of the modern world have impacted on traditional ways of life. Required reading will include a selection of poems and short stories, George Mackay Brown’s Orkney novel Greenvoe, and a variety of background material.
