Kommentar: The seminar will provide insights into the genre of the short story by comparing early examples from the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century with contemporary works. These texts will be studied in detail with regard to the techniques they use and the effects they thereby attempt to produce on their readers. The corpus of stories to be analysed spans a number of literatures in English, from Britain and Ireland to the United States and Singapore. Through its small format, the short story can be considered to respond quickly to changing social and cultural concerns, and a comparative approach may thus also tell us something about developing and potentially culture-specific concepts of the workings and functions of literary texts. It is essential for the success of the seminar that participants prepare the short stories under discussion in detail at home. If necessary, this knowledge will be tested in the course of the seminar.
