Kommentar: As central spaces of everyday life, restaurants play a unique role as sites of labor and consumption. Food, drink, and interior design are just as significant as the work of cooks, waiters, and the occasional restaurant critic. Keeping these nuances in mind, this class will explore a wide variety of restaurant writing from the fields of sociology, literature, journalism, and anthropology. We will tie our discussion to a larger framework of modernity, postmodernity, and the concept of the postindustrial society. Participants will conduct their own research projects, some on a local or regional level, others devoted to national and transnational cultural representations.
