Inhalt:
This course systematically analyzes television discourse. We will briefly address the communicative context of fictional television and aspects of multimodality. The main part of our seminar will be the linguistic analysis of diegetic utterances in Downton Abbey. We will address questions such as:
- Do the characters speak dialects or do they merely use accents?
- Does their vernacular fit their background mentioned in the series?
- Are the words used in the series ‘correct’ for a series set in the early 20th century?
- What are the conventions in certain communicative situations such as master-servant interaction or dinner-talk?
- To what extent is the language used by characters in a TV programme different from "naturally" occuring language (e.g. in terms of word frequencies)?
In order to be able to reasonably participate, you must have watched at least the first season of Downton Abbey before the term starts.

Please note that it is only possible to get a LN (= 6 LP) in this course. No TN (= 3 LP) can be given for attending this course. If you want to attend, you have to participate actively.
