Literatur:
Students are asked to bring printed full-text versions of the plays to the respective course sessions. These can be in book-form (for instance the Reclam-editions or the Penguin-editions) or printed out from the internet. Full-text versions of all Shakespearean plays can be found online (see e.g. http://shakespeare.mit.edu/).

Kommentar:
In this seminar we will discuss four Shakespearean plays from different dramatic genres and selected filmic adaptations of them. The plays will be analysed in relation to the political and socioeconomic situation in Elizabethan England, as well as the dramatic and theatrical conventions of the day. We will start out discussing two tragedies, Othello and Macbeth and will continue with the comedy, A Midsummer Night's Dream. To conclude, we will treat The Tempest which is more difficult to place genre-wise. The film versions of the plays are intended to give us an idea of Shakespeare's contemporary relevance. We might also have the opportunity of watching one of the set plays on stage as the theatre in Paderborn ('Westfälische Kammerspiele') will be playing Othello from October onwards. In this way participants will be able to study the play from three different angles, including the script, a film- as well as a staged version.
