Kommentar:
This course will introduce students to the increasingly popular but rather fuzzy concept of 'Cultural Studies', presenting the main topics, methods and models connected with this approach. We will try to strike a balance between the theoretical and practical aspects of 'culture', i.e. abstract approaches will always be applied to (in the broadest sense) 'cultural practices' like TV, film, advertising or tourism. In addition, categories like class, nation or gender will be discussed in relation to individual and group identities and with regard to their reflection in contemporary British literature and popular culture.

Requirements for credits

To acquire 'qualifizierte Teilnahme' students have to write three 10-minute quizzes in the course of the semester of which two need to be passed. These quizzes will consist of multiple choice questions about the topics treated up to that point.
Students who need to do their 'Modulprüfung' in the Introduction to Cultural Studies will have to sit an additional test of 45 minutes in the last session of term. The final test will contain questions about the topics treated in the course to be answered in key words as well as one or two short tasks of analysis.
The following students need to sit both, the quizzes and the final test: 'old' Lehramt, B.Ed. GyGe, HRGe, and BK, as well as Zwei-Fach Bachelors who choose the Introduction to Cultural Studies for their 'Modulprüfung' in the introductory module.
Students of B.Ed. Grundschule and those Zwei-Fach Bachelor-students who choose the Introduction to Literary Studies for their 'Modulprüfung' in the introductory module, only have to write the three quizzes and pass two of them.
