Literatur: The theoretical texts and the representations to be studied will be made available via PAUL for preparation at home. Visual representations will also be shown in class.
Kommentar: This seminar deals with a topic that is currently very 'fashionable' in Cultural Studies – the study of space and the way in which the representations of specific spaces are linked with the construction of individual and group identities. The analysis of individual representations will be based on excerpts from important theoretical approaches in the area of spatial studies. In the selection of the representations, the focus will be on spaces which play a central role in British identity constructions, and the beach as a space will serve as a key case study. The representations will be drawn from a wide range of media including literary texts as well as photographs and films. It is essential for the success of the seminar that participants read the theories and the representations under discussion at home. If necessary, this knowledge will be tested in the course of the seminar.
