Literatur: The art works to be studied and the necessary secondary texts will be made available via PAUL. For preparation, it will be helpful to read an overview of the development of British art in the 20th century, e.g. Blast to Freeze. British Art in the 20th Century, Hatje Cantz, 2002.
Kommentar: This seminar aims at introducing students to the key phases of the development of British art in the 20th and into the 21st century. We will analyse selected art works in order to become familiar with the approaches of important artists as well as the principles of artistic production typical of particular periods. Some special points of interest will be Vorticism in the 1910s and 1920s, pop art of the 1960s and the 'sensation' artists of the 1990s. The broader cultural and sometimes also political context will be included where appropriate. In order to analyse the art works, it will also be necessary to study some theoretical texts and/or secondary works as a basis of the discussion. It is essential for the success of the seminar that participants prepare such texts at home and also analyse selected art works before the seminar sessions. If necessary, this knowledge will be tested in the course of the seminar. A basic willingness to engage with difficult and sometimes perhaps controversial art works is presupposed.
