Kommentar: Canada’s ‘obsession with identity’ is as notorious as the rejection to define what is ‘truly Canadian’. The country is the world’s second largest and includes different geographic landscapes and climate zones, while the proportionally small population assembles people with a variety of ethnic, linguistic and cultural backgrounds. According to the public discourse in Canada, society preserves a ‘cultural mosaic’ rather than forcing differences into a ‘melting pot’. We will examine identity politics implemented by the government and different interest groups in Canada and study concepts of identity as constructed, propounded, and represented in various media and by a range of Canadians, including artists, philosophers, representatives of minorities and politicians, but also journalists, sportspeople, and average citizens. We will analyze the abundance of stereotypes associated with Canada, using sources such as theoretical and literary texts, films, music, blogs, advertisements and lifestyle magazines. Thus, we will discuss not only different forms of Canadian identities but also some of the background and processes that influence them andthat have played a role in the cultural formation of contemporary Canada. Special emphasis will be put on a practical and interactive learning approach. The course takes place bi-weekly from 2-6 p.m. and starts 15 April 2013.
