Kommentar: International Peacekeeping is far more than blue helmet troops on the ground after a conflict. It is rather a delicate and complex process that must take into account diverse cultures, histories, and geographies in preparing a road map from conflict to peace and security. This course aims to help students gain an understanding and appreciation of international peacekeeping. The course will start by examining the origins (Wilson's 14 Points and the League of Nations), history, and function of the United Nations. It will also provide a history of international peacekeeping and then discuss the principles of peacekeeping, successes and failures and the interconnection of NGO’s and the UN in peacekeeping operations. Peacekeeping issues such as mine action, gender and peacekeeping, environment and sustainability, disarmament, children in conflict and human rights will be investigated and discussed. Students will finally put theory into practice by modeling an UN committee. In doing so, students will become acquainted with Model UN rules of procedure, the principles of resolution writing and the preparation of position papers. A 5-day excursion to England (20.-24.05.2013) will provide the opportunity to gain an insight into different institutions involved in international peacekeeping and their positions on this particular subject. We are awaiting final confirmation, but the trip should include a visit to London (IMO), Milton Keynes (World Vision), Gibraltar Barracks (British Army Royal Engineers) and Shrivenham (Royal Military Defence College). The estimated cost for transportation and accommodation is around 350€ (please keep in mind that the PAUL deadline made it impossible to give the exact cost). The excursion will be limited to 40 students! Details regarding the excursion will be discussed in the first session. Students will also be given the opportunity to participate in the PaderMUN conference (June 28-30).
