Inhalt:
This course will look into the history and culture under Queen Victoria. We will look at various topics ranging from industrialization, colonialism, the suffragette movement, utilitarianism, the social strata, and their representation in literature, newspaper writing and the arts. To
Students will be provided with a reader of primary and secondary literature. Knowledge of the various texts will be tested in various reading-tests.
Required reading also includes:
Charles Dickens, Hard Times
Oscar Wilde, "The Importance of Being Earnest"
Joseph Conrad, Heart of Darkness
Knowledge of the two novels and the drama will be tested in a mandatory reading test in the first session.
